2012 Mayan Calendar ‘Doomsday’ Date Might Be Wrong

It is commonly known that the Mayan’s “predicted” the end of the world on December 21, 2012. Predicted by one of their calendars, they suspect the world to end due to many cataclysmic astronomical events, which we know is completely incorrect. But according to a professor at UC Santa Barbara, the “end day” may be inaccurate by a total of 60 days at least. Historians have also said that the Mayan calendar never predicted an apocalypse. When the Mayans created the “Long Count” calendar, a departure from the shorter calendars, it was a numerically predictable calendar, not based on archaic measures of time. The Mayans predicted that the calendar would run out after 5,126 years. This calendar began in the year 3114 making the “end date” 2012. The date is December 21st due to the day the day the Winter Solstice begins in the Northern Hemisphere. The major issue with this date being inaccurate is the fact that archaeologists might of miscalculated the right day due to the fact that the Mayan calendar didn’t perfectly translate into “our” Gregorian calendar of years, months, and days.

i personally do not believe that this is the date to the end of the world. There are many assumptions and predictions made when really archaeologists might of miscalculated the right day due to the fact that the Mayan calendar didn’t perfectly translate into “our” Gregorian calendar of years, months, and days.

I thought it was pretty suspicious that we had an exact date to begin with, but hey, with all the rumors flying about, who can blame the scientists? Interesting article!

This is very interesting considering how much attention that particular date has received, even a recent movie about it and countless History Channel specials. The only reason I am on the fence about the whole 2012 craze is because I had heard that the Mayans predicted a man who would come and upset their entire society and way of life, and soon after this prediction Cortez came around.

I also don't beleive that the world is going to end in 2012 and I don't beleive that the Myans even predicted the end of the world. Even if the world was to end on December 21, 2010 all the places in the world that are a day ahead of us would be celebrating so wouldn't half the world technicaly end on the 22nd?

I personally believe that the world won't end in 2012 because: the gmt (conversion into our calendar)could be off and also many other past societies have all predicted the end of the world and it hasn't happened. Some we have all ready passed and some are yet to come like with the Mayans. I think that if the Mayans were not so advanced, the topic would not have received as much media which, also would have led to it not being such a controversial issue.

I think it's ironic how much attention society has put on the belief that the world is going to end on Dec. 21, 2012, but scientists could have been wrong when converting the calendar. I don't completely believe that the world is going to end, something might drastically change around that time, but I like to keep my mind open and think that anything is possible. I guess we will find out Dec. 22, 2012.

I don't think that the world is going to end in 2012 or sixty days earlier or later. And because places in the world are in different time zone and some places are a day or so ahead of. others people can't say the world is going to end all on one specific day

Personnaly, I don't know what to believe. I once did research on this topic and one of the points to disprove this belief was that the Mayans were not even the ones who predicted this event. They had apparently gotten the idea from the Olmecs who had originally stated that only a huge change in the world would take place. Not necessarily the end of the world. but at the same time it makes you wonder why so many people were willing to accept this prediction on such a wide scale when there are so many facts attempting to disprove it.

Personally, I don't know what to believe about this date. I had once done research on this topic and there were many facts to disprove the idea. First of all, it had been said that the Mayans had acctually adopted this end date from the Olmecs who had actually said that this date would bring world change. Not necessarily the end of the world. However, it kind of makes me wonder why, even though there are so many facts out there to disprove this theoary, the idea that the world will end on this date is so widely accepted.

The Mayans never believed the end of their long count marked the end of the world. They believed it would be the start of a great change and that shifts of change occurs in cycles. I don't know how it was misconceived to mark the end of the world. It's not even important if the date is accurate or not in reality.

I found it hard to believe that they could actually pinpoint the exact dat of which it would end. It still isn't completely proven that the world will end in 2012 and I don't think we will know for sure until that year has passed.
Very good job with this article by the way! Short, sweet, and to the point!

I don't believe that this is true, this particular date was just the end of the Mayan calendar, NOT the end of the world. I personally think all the recent hype regarding this date is just another way for the media to take advantage of gullible people.
